HUSH: They Can Hear — How to Hotwire Cars and Drive Them

Hotwiring in HUSH: They Can Hear is a quick ring mini-game. Learn which cars need hotwiring instead of keys, how to hit the green sector with SPACE, and when to attempt it.

Quick answer

Check the car's interaction prompt first. If it says HOTWIRE, a ring mini-game starts: press SPACE the moment the rotating pointer reaches the highlighted green sector. Success activates the vehicle, and you can drive it away.

Some found cars in HUSH: They can hear start with a hotwire instead of keys. Here is how the mini-game works, how to tell it apart from keyed vehicles, and when attempting it is worth the noise.

Check what the vehicle asks for first

Not every found vehicle needs hotwiring. The interaction prompt you see when you approach tells you which activation path applies:

  • HOTWIRE — the vehicle needs the mini-game below. A blue pickup in one run required exactly this.
  • [F] BREAK IN — some vehicles let you break in directly. A yellow van showed this prompt; entering it turned up keys (a FOUND KEYS message), and the van drove normally afterward.

Whether specific vehicle types always need hotwiring or always hold keys isn't established, so go by the prompt on each car rather than the vehicle type.

How the hotwire mini-game works

  1. Approach the car and confirm the prompt reads HOTWIRE.
  2. Start the hotwire. A ring appears with a rotating pointer and a highlighted green sector.
  3. Press SPACE when the pointer reaches the green sector. A well-timed hit is labeled GREAT.
  4. On success the vehicle activates and becomes drivable. In the observed run, the very first attempt landed GREAT and the truck pulled away immediately.

That's the whole task: one well-timed press activates the car.

Time it right: hotwiring is loud

The game's core loop tells you to hotwire a car only when the escape path is clear, and its beginner tips put it bluntly: cars are loud, and hotwiring is a commitment — use it for distance, not sightseeing. Pick a quiet moment, decide where you are driving before you start, and treat the car as transport to an exit rather than a joyride.

Driving off — and one mistake that costs HP

A successfully hotwired vehicle drives like any other. In one session, a hotwired truck carried the player to the roadside extraction post at THE FARM TRACK (a green WAY OUT marker near SUNSHINE FARM) to finish the run. The best loot locations guide covers the green WAY OUT markers, and the escape guide covers extraction in detail.

Avoid the costly move from that same run: jumping out of the still-moving truck dropped the player's health bar with a red hit flash — that jump visibly cost HP. Slow down or stop before you bail.
