How to Turn On the Flashlight and Night Vision in HUSH: They Can Hear

Press F for the flashlight and N for night vision in HUSH: They can hear. What both toggles do while you explore, loot and sneak past sound-hunting monsters.

Quick answer

Press F to toggle the flashlight and N to toggle night vision in HUSH: They can hear. Both keys are on the developer's official keyboard controls list for the BETA build.

What the flashlight and night vision are for

HUSH: They can hear is built around one premise: the monsters hunting you track sound. You sneak into the town, loot what you can, and get out before anything hears you. Get caught, and you lose everything you're carrying (our guide to what happens when you're caught covers the details). The flashlight and night vision exist for the exploring part of that loop: they let you read a dark room, spot loot, find doorways and pick a route toward an exit instead of feeling your way along walls.

The visibility and view keys

KeyAction
FFlashlight on or off
NNight vision on or off
MOpen the map
VSwitch to first person

All four come straight from the official controls list and work during play. The same list covers movement (WASD, Space, Shift, C), weapons and car keys; the full breakdown lives on our HUSH: They can hear controls page.

Reading the paper map while you explore

Press M and your character physically holds up a paper map. Scroll the mouse wheel to zoom, hold the left button to drag it around, hold the right button to bring it in close, and press M again to put it away. V switches the camera to first person if you prefer that view. Our best loot locations page goes deeper into what the map shows.

Visibility gear worth chasing

The keyboard toggles are not the only way to brighten a run. One player tips video recommends trying to get night vision goggles or a flashlight for exploring, and specifically recommends night vision goggles for the better visibility they give. Treat that as experienced-player advice rather than an official statement, but it points the same direction as the controls: seeing clearly while you sneak, loot and slip out makes every trip easier. Our gear list covers the equipment worth looking for.

Quiet movement decides whether a run ends well, and seeing where you're going decides whether you find anything at all. F and N are two keystrokes that make the dark town readable, so learn them before your first loot trip. The beginner guide walks you through the rest of the loop from there.
