HUSH: They Can Hear Car Controls — How to Get Into a Car and What F, Shift, B, G and H Do

Learn how to enter and exit cars in HUSH: They Can Hear, how break-ins and hotwiring work, and what F, Shift, B, G and H do while you drive.

Quick answer

Press F next to a car to get in, and F again to get out. While driving, Shift drifts, B fastens the seat belt, G runs the wipers and H sounds the horn.

  • F — enter or exit the vehicle
  • Shift — drift
  • B — seat belt
  • G — wipers
  • H — horn

Cars can get you across the town in HUSH: They can hear, but the keys change meaning the moment you sit down. On foot, F is your flashlight and Shift makes you run; in a car, F enters and exits, and Shift drifts. Learn the driving set before you roll out.

How to get into a car

  1. Walk up to a vehicle and press F. If the car is unlocked, you drop straight into the driver's seat.
  2. Some vehicles are locked. A yellow van shows an [F] BREAK IN prompt — press F again to force your way in.
  3. Cars like the blue pickup ask for one more step: a HOTWIRE ring mini-game. Press SPACE when the rotating pointer reaches the highlighted green sector, and the engine starts.

Watch the prompt on screen: if a plain press of F does not put you in the driver's seat, the game tells you whether that car needs breaking into or hotwiring. The hotwiring guide goes deeper into that mini-game.

These five bindings come straight from the game's official controls list. The two that matter most are the ones that changed: pressing F in the driver's seat opens the door instead of toggling the flashlight, and Shift slides the car instead of sprinting. B, G and H do not appear anywhere in the on-foot list — seat belt, wipers and horn are purely driving keys. Every on-foot and driving binding is collected on the full controls page.

What to know before you drive

Driving is loud. In one recorded run, the loudness meter in the bottom-left corner read about 81 dB while driving — far above roughly 52 dB walking and 33 dB crouched indoors. The monsters hunt by sound, so a car this loud is easy for them to hear. Drive to where you need to be, then switch back to slow, quiet movement on foot; the tips and tricks guide covers that side of the game.

Do not jump out while the car is still moving. When one player bailed out of a truck that was still rolling, the health bar dropped with a red hit flash and the caption warned that HP will decrease. Slow down and exit with F rather than leaping from a moving vehicle.

Use cars to reach your exit. In one full run, a player drove to THE FARM TRACK — a green exit near SUNSHINE FARM — and pressed [E] CALL EXTRACTION at the roadside post to start the extraction countdown. That makes a car a practical way to close the distance between a loot run and the way out. How the extraction itself plays out is covered in the escape guide.

If you are new to the game, the beginner guide walks through the whole loop of sneaking in, looting and getting out.
